| Purvis Young (B. 1943) has been called the "one of the best- if not the best- pure painters of the 20th century," He was discovered by the art community of "Good Bread Alley", the economically depressed section of Miami known as Overtown. Here he painted on the walls of Goodbread Alley in the ghetto, working with found objects, plywood boards, upholstery fabric, curtains, poster board and house paint. He often sketches in cast-off books, painting directly over the printed words, creating highly symbolic images that captivate and challenge the viewer. Horses and trucks in his work and represent freedom, railroad tracks signify division; large heads floating above a crowd represent angels and good people. When asked about Purvis's work, Jane Fonda replied "The first thing that struck me was the hopefulness of the work." There is hope and joy with Purvis' obsessive brush. Recent auction prices for his work have been staggering. | |||||||
