| A pastel/charcoal drawing by Thorton Dial, one of the best known outsider artists. Born in Sumter County, Alabama in 1928, Dial did not gain national notoriety until the 1980s, after he had been working in and around Bessemer, AL, as a carpenter, bricklayer, welder, and steelworker. Always signing his work "TD", Dial's works, always challenging, are often humorous and reflective at the same time. Dial's work defies categorization, though his self-assurance, his heroic vision and his determination place him among those contemporaries who have forged new visual territories. Thornton Dial has had one man shows in New York City and Houston, and is now recognized as one of the greatest living self-taught artists in the United States. "Art ain’t about paint. It ain’t about canvas. It’s about ideas. Too many people died without ever getting their mind out to the world. I have found how to get my ideas out and I won’t stop. I got ten thousand left." | ||||||||
