| Charles Woodbury (1863-1940) a Massachusetts born artist who became a leader of the Artist Colony in Ogunquit, Maine. Woodbury's formal art training began in 1890 in Paris. Returning to Boston he became a prominent plein-air and impressionist painter. He was the youngest person ever elected to the Boston Art Club. He taught more than 4,000 students (including Wellesley College), had more than 100 solo exhibits, and wrote three important art education books. To this day Woodbury still remains a strong influence on art education. Woodbury told his students to "paint in verbs, not in nouns." His work is never static. His message to his students: "Don't just paint it, paint it doing something." -- and this emphasis on movement is present in his seascapes, trees, clouds, and figures that he painted. The sense of things in motion is produced through quick, sure-handed strokes that convey his mastery of the mediums. | |||||||||
