| An unusual early 18th Century Queen Anne table whose top is 28"X 54". The caster mounted pad or spoon feet are classic Queen Anne and are pegged into the frame below the top; working drawers on both sides have brass pulls, that appear original. This table is unusual for several reasons. The use of mahogany in the early 1700s was unusual. Besides being less fashionable than the popular walnut or oak, mahogany was and always has been hard to get. It all had to be imported; yet this one piece top makes it even more exotic. Also, the form is unusual. The table may have functioned as a simple partner’s desk, but more likely we think it could have served a multitude of purposes in an early English household of wealth. Casters allowed the owners to move the table with ease, acting, for example, as a serving table, More 18th century furniture than we realize was originally made with casters (many have been removed over the years) to accommodate the needs of households whose limited furnishings were commonly moved around the house with ease. Early 18th century tables like this larger size are very hard to find of solid mahogany. | |||||||
