| Silva was a 19th Century American luminist artist working in New York and New Jersey. He did fabulous sunset scenes of the Hudson River Valley with such technical accuracy that scholars today can feel they know the exact spot from where he painted. The end of his career was marked by more commercial paintings, many in New Jersey. This painting, an oil on board (the board is labeled and a pencil attribution is written on the reverse) measures 9 3/4" X 22 1/4" in its original gilt wood "inner" frame. This is an oil sketch of a sunset scene showing Silva's skills, while he practices his skill at capturing the intensity, depth and "luminosity" of sunset on the Hudson. | |||||
