| A pair of hand painted stone lithograph ornithological prints by the famous team of J. Gould and H. C. Richter, both in matching suitably matted frames. John Gould (1804-1881)was probably the most famous of all British Ornithologists. Being a contemporary of the American John James Audubon, his colleagues gave him the nickname "The Bird Man" due to his prolific production of as many as 299 depictions of various birds. Among Gould's works, the delicate renderings of Hummingbirds proved to be the most popular. To capture the hummingbirds' naturally beautiful iridescence Gould utilized gold or silver leaf in the paint with gum Arabic highlights. The dramatic results can be seen in this pair, each with their iridescent plumage. **L During the mid-19th Century, only the most affluent could afford Gould's lithographs that were subscribed in bound volumes. The prints within these volumes have been sought after eagerly by collectors due to their artistic beauty and superb craftsmanship in their making. Here is your opportunity to own original hand-colored Gould for a very reasonable price. Framed under non-glare glass 19 5/8 x 25 5/8".
