| Justin McCarthy (1892-1977)is a major self-taught or "outsider" artist. His work is not easily categorized; yet the values and recognition factors of his work has grown year after year. McCarthy was born in Pennsylvania the son of a newspaper executive. He first wanted to be a lawyer but failed to pass the bar, so he settled into a life of raising and selling vegetables- and painting, which he began in 1920 after a visit to the Louvre in Paris. His work went unnoticed until the 1960s when he began to show in outdoor art shows. He met Sterling and Dorothy Strauser who brought his talent to the attention of museums and collectors. McCarthy was excellent in capturing the feeling and impression of people preforming or objects. He was also an careful observer, translating his impressions paint with the same elements that the "trained" and "schooled" artists struggled to bring to the publics eye throughout the 20th century; yet he stands apart because he is "untrained", with innate sensibilities finding their natural expression in 20th century abstract terms. An oil on board, and signed lower left with two provenance labels on the back. Mounted within a plain white frame. Site measurements are 24" X 18". "Justin McCarthy was a genius, and all geniuses ultimately remain somewhat enigmatic." So wrote Randall Morris in his introduction the recent exhibition of McCarthy's work at the Noyes Museum in New Jersey. Justin McCarthy's paintings have been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Everhart Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection in Williamsburg, Virginia, and the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. The Museum of Modern Art included his work in a traveling exhibition in 1967. RL* | ||
