| A early or mid 19th century Scottish tall case clock in mahogany, mahogany veneer and inlay with pressed brass rosettes. The clock has the familiar painted dial associated with the early to mid 1800s: the broke arch with a family scene by a fireplace and the four spandrels symbolically depicting the four seasons. There may have been a signature on the dial, but that is now rubbed off. The clockworks are the eight day type, striking the hours on a bell. Choice mahoganies were used for construction throughout, within the usual construction and styling of this case. A great looking and well proportioned antique grandfather clock with a short overall height of 82 1/2". The feet of this clock were removed and possibly the bottom molding added, although typically these cases had a bottom molding like this. It is not unusual for feet of a 150-200 year old wooden case clock to have become damaged, dry rot, or simply removed to shorten the height of the clock. This clock probably had turned feet or bracket feet originally. RL* | ||||||||
