| The classically styled "Howard #70" wall timepiece was a familiar sight to those who frequented public places in the late 1800s. It was then vital to be able to know the time of day, especially in railroad stations, where this clock probably hung. It is our experience that this very clock was used in a Railroad station, since it is our experience that those with numbered dials, such as this, were owned by Railroads. The Howard Clock Company of Boston arguably made the best commercial timepieces in the country during the second half of the 1800s, and although their cases were generally plain they do not lack in elegance. This case is solid black walnut with the typical original red, black and gold reverse painted glass. A repair was made to the seating for the bezel hinge, the red is flaking off the reverse painting, and the case has been refinished. The clock has it original weight driven movement (stamped for identification on the front plate), weight, pendulum, and untouched dial. The height of the clock is 31", the dial diameter is 12".
