Maurice Courant, French, Honfleur Harbor
A French impressionist oil on board show of a moonlight evening. The moonlight soaks into the surrounding watery landscape and sailboats with a extraordinarily fine effect, as sailboats silently approach the twilight moon lit in Northern France. Known for his impressionist marine seascapes, Courant was born at Havre, France. He studied under Meissonier and debuted at the Salon in 1868 where he exhibited throughout his career. he won prize medals in 1870, 1889, and 1900. He also was a regular contributor to the Society of Arts in Paris. A significant number of his works are held by the Rouen Museum as well as Mulhouse. Drawing his inspiration from his impressionist contemporaries and the Northern French coast he specialized in marine subjects. According to the previous owner, this very example was sold by Christies in London May 14th 1923 and has been in private hands until purchased from the previous owner. Signed and dated (1917) lower left and also signed, dated and titled on the back. Probably some minor in-painting. The outside frame is 23" X 27"; the sight dimensions are 14 1/2" X 18" RL*
