Dame Walker (1861-1951) was born in Edinburgh, trained at The Putney School and Slade School, studied with Whistler. She was obviously influenced by her contemporary impressionists. She was knighted in 1943 and studied at the Westminster School under Fred Brown and James Whistler. This portrait comes to us through the Howland family of Alexndria, Virginia and Baltimore, MD where it was obtained from one of the Howland family members.
