A "theorem" painting on ivory velvet in a rosewood veneer frame using the technique of stencil painting. The painting is delightful and the highlights refined. The floral arrangement features tulips, roses, morning glories and other flowers and two butterflies. Although there is minor discoloration in the velvet fabric, the art has apparently never been removed from the original frame. Ca 1850- 1870. 23 1/2 X 15"

An oil painting dated 1960 depicting a side-wheeler riverboat, signed E.H. McGee. McGee, a 20th Century American artist, has signed and dated the work lower right. McGee's outsider artist style captures both the gaudiness and glory of those 19th century Mississippi River steamboats. The aging of the painting with crackelature and some discolorations adds to this old time charm. Signed and dated lower right, "E.H. McGee 11-24-60". Mounted on the frame is the paper tag:"River Qu ...click for details

A fine oil of great skill and sensitivity of Sarah Howland by Chester Harding. This portrait comes to us through the Howland family of Alexndria, Virginia and Baltimore, MD where it was obtained from one of the Howland family members. Dating the painting is estimated by the tightly laced bodice of her dress, and its lacking of puffed sleeves; a fashion, we are told, that only prevailed for a few years between 1835 and 1840. The site measurements of the canvas are 16 1/2" X 14 1/2" with ...click for details

Justin McCarthy (1892-1977)is a major self-taught or "outsider" artist. His work is not easily categorized; yet his work has grown in recognition year after year. McCarthy was born in Pennsylvania the son of a newspaper executive. He first wanted to be a lawyer but failed to pass the bar, so he settled into a life of raising and selling vegetables- and painting, which he began in 1920 after a visit to the Louvre in Paris. His work went unnoticed until the 1960s when he began to show in ...click for details
