A Impressionist painting of a young ballet dancer in front of a mirror, signed by the artist, lower right. Titled, verso, "La Petite Dansuese" and also signed Jocelyne Sequin (French, 1917-1999). The frame measures 22" X 18", and has been repaired in the lower left corner. The sight measurements are 14" X 9". How well a lovely, small painting can tell a big story: the young ballet dancer stands before the mirror anticipating what could be her first performance.

Justin McCarthy (1892-1977)is a major self-taught or "outsider" artist. His work is not easily categorized; yet his work has grown in recognition year after year. McCarthy was born in Pennsylvania the son of a newspaper executive. He first wanted to be a lawyer but failed to pass the bar, so he settled into a life of raising and selling vegetables- and painting, which he began in 1920 after a visit to the Louvre in Paris. His work went unnoticed until the 1960s when he began to show in ...click for details

A pastel/charcoal drawing by Thorton Dial, one of the best known outsider artists. Born in Sumter County, Alabama in 1928, Dial did not gain national notoriety until the 1980s, after he had been working in and around Bessemer, AL, as a carpenter, bricklayer, welder, and steelworker. Always signing his work "TD", Dial's works, always challenging, are often humorous and reflective at the same time. Dial's work defies categorization, though his self-assurance, his heroic vision an ...click for details

Jim Bloom created this startling expressionist painting showing the tensions and anxieties while in an airport terminal at Memphis. It is one of his most recent works. Jim Bloom pulls from a well of personal experience using technical innovation to create a highly expressive and emotional style. Fearlessly innovating, drawing over cutout images, painting on paper or cardboard or whatever materials on hand, and creating elaborately layered abstract collages often with seething figural connotation ...click for details

Purvis Young (B. 1943) has been called the "one of the best- if not the best- pure painters of the 20th century," He was discovered by the art community of "Good Bread Alley", the economically depressed section of Miami known as Overtown. Here he painted on the walls of Goodbread Alley in the ghetto, working with found objects, plywood boards, upholstery fabric, curtains, poster board and house paint. He often sketches in cast-off books, painting directly over the printed wo ...click for details

A "theorem" painting on ivory velvet in a rosewood veneer frame using the technique of stencil painting. The painting is delightful and the highlights refined. The floral arrangement features tulips, roses, morning glories and other flowers and two butterflies. Although there is minor discoloration in the velvet fabric, the art has apparently never been removed from the original frame. Ca 1850- 1870. 23 1/2 X 15"
