A sundial in the armillary sphere style. Sometimes armillary sundials were made with numerous rings which early astronomers used to observe planets and stars. This simple version will tell time with the sun's shadow when set up correctly. The points of the engraved compass on the base need to be oriented correctly with the actual North. A large round, hand-made copper bowl, 21" in diameter and 9" high. The rolled edge has bale handles and the bottom piece dovetail joined with the top. There is a repair at the rim, and the polished bowl has dents and discoloration that would be consistent with this utensil's age and usage. Could be used as a kitchen kettle as well as a fireplace kindling container or just as decoration.
